insurance questions

Dr. Sellers is an "OUT OF NETWORK" physician. He is not a member of any insurance plan. You will pay him for the visit and send your information to your insurance company to have them pay you.
If you are going to utilize your health insurance to pay for coming to see Dr. Sellers, you can use the receipt we give you to send to your insurance company.

You may wish to call your insurance company and ask how much they will reimburse you. On the back of your insurance card will be several phone numbers. One will be "for mental health inquiries". Call that number and ask the following questions:
      1) I am planning to see an "out of network" physician. Do I have "out of network" coverage?
      2) Do I have an "out of network" deductible or just one deductible? Have I met any of my deductible?
      3) Once I have met my deductible, how much will my insurance pay toward a visit? (If they give you a percentage amount, say 70%, ask if you find out exactly how much that will be. They may mean 70% of their rate or fee, and not 70% of Dr. Sellers' fee).

      4) Do I have to have my visits authorized?

WHY DR. SELLERS IS an OUT-OF-NETWORK PHYSICIAN
Insurance companies ask physicians to "discount" their fees in exchange for referring patients to their office. For example, a physician would only charge the insurance company 60% of his fee in exchange for them sending him patients. This physician would be "in network". You see this physician, pay your co-payment, and the physician would accept the "discounted" amount from the insurance company.
When a physician accepts this, there is a significant pressure to be "more efficient" with one's time. This can express itself as seeing a patient as quickly as possible. To make up for the reduced fees, one may "over-book" appointments in case someone does not show up, so that there is no "down" time. Sometimes this may manifest itself as having to wait for long periods of time before one's appointment.

Dr. Sellers does not think this is a good deal for the physician or patient. The reduction in cost is sometimes paid for in less time in your visit and longer waits during the visit.

You will pay more to see Dr. Sellers, but you will get more for that increased cost.
