Forensic Psychiatry
"Forensic" does not mean "dead people". Forensic psychiatry is the application of psychiatric knowledge and expertise to legal questions in legal settings. There are numerous legal questions which require psychiatric knowledge and expertise.
Dr. Sellers is Board Certified in Forensic Psychiatry.
He teaches topics in Forensic Psychiatry to physicians at the UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry where he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry. Dr. Sellers spends less than 30% of his time on forensic matters. More than 70% of his time is devoted to the clinical practice of psychiatry. He has been retained by both the prosecution and defense, as well as plaintiff and defendant.
Dr Sellers has conducted a variety of evaluations. Some of these include the following:
Competency to Stand Trial,
Sanity at the time of the crime,
Mitigation,
Custody & impact of psychiatric illness on parenting capacity,
Psychic injury, and
Sexual Abuse.
Dr. Sellers has conducted Independent Medical Evaluations (Fitness for Duty Evaluation, 2nd opinion, presence of malingered mental illness) for insurance companies and employers.
